How the C-store channel is changing, and what is driving those changes

man shopping at a convenience store

The face of the typical convenience store has changed so much over the past twenty years; it has gone from being a stop of necessity, to a destination. Foodservice within the c-store has also become a destination. In the past, hungry customers would stop by convenience stores for a hot dog and a fountain drink, and few other options. Today, in addition to the roller grill, there are many fresh and made to order options. The offering of locally sourced and specialty food items has also become mainstream in convenience.

Shopper preferences and behaviors are changing and consumers are gravitating away from traditional supermarkets, which are expected to decrease 24% by 2021, to store formats that more closely meet their needs. This opens up an opportunity for the convenience channel. Research shows shoppers increasingly prize efficiency and quality when it comes to where they shop and what they buy; the good news for the convenience channel is “convenience” is in its name.
